Di-Tech AAL Fluoride Removal Cartridge

Basic Description: Standard 9.75" X 2.5" Black Vessel. Contains 550 grams of Activated Alumina, the industry standard fluoride/arsenic removal medium. This is a non-certified cartridge made of all FDA-grade materials and media.

Pressure Drop: N/A

Medium: Special fine mesh activated alumina that has been pre-conditioned specifically for single-use cartridge (not regenerable).

Our Part Number (can be used for ordering): DI-FL.

General Usage Recommendation: Can be used in undersink filters, especially multiple filters. This is a specialty filter for the removal of fluoride and arsenic. No taste/odor improvement should be expected. For use in drinking water filters where flow rate is not excessive.

Suggested Change Interval with Normal Usage: The manufacturer’s designation is for “5500 ppm (parts per million) Fluoride.” They point out, however, that under good conditions it can perform to as much as twice that, or 11,000 ppm. In raw numbers, 5500 would mean that if your water has 3 parts per million fluoride, it should remove or greatly reduce the fluoride from 1833 gallons. If it has 5 parts per million, then the capacity would be 1100 gals. Etc.

However, the manufacturer cautions that “high pH, high bicarbonate levels and high flow rates all adversely affect the capacity of the Di-Tech AAL.” (AAL is what Di-Tech calls the cartridge. We call it FL for simplicity.) It operates well at a pH range of 3 to 9 (that covers almost all water.) The manufacturer states: “For influent streams above 100 ppm bicarbonate, reduce capacity by 50%; above 200 ppm, reduce capacity by 75%.” Ideal flow rate is 0.25 gallons per minute, which is slow, even for a drinking water filter. Reduce life expectancy if you plan to run the filter faster than 1/4 gallon per minute, which is pretty slow.

In other words, it’s really hard to put a number on it. Some of our customers change these annually. Others run them for two years. A good rule of thumb might be that if your water is very high in fluoride, change annually, but if you’re removing only the 1 ppp that your city water supplier adds, it should do that easily for two years under normal drinking water circumstances. Keep in mind that if you are using this cartridge in conjunction with a carbon filter, the carbon unit will probably also remove some fluoride.

FYI—Carbon cartridges in general usually do a pretty good job of fluoride removal, although manufacturers never make this claim because there are so many variables (pH, mineral content of water, etc.) that it’s hard to justify. Reverse osmosis and distillation remove fluoride consistently well and without question.

Replacement Cost: (quantity pricing can lower cost): $39.
