Installation is simply a matter of installing the membrane in its housing then attaching the inlet hose of the unit to a tap water source.

First, install the membrane as per these instructions.

Then, install the diverter valve onto a faucet as you would with any countertop filter.

Startup for Style A Units

After a faucet attachment is made, start the unit by turning on the COLD water tap and pulling out the knob on the diverter valve to divert water through the unit. Place both the drain line and the product water line in a sink or other suitable drain. Very soon water will begin to come from the drain line. Water will not issue from the product water line for a few minutes. (Production is at the rate of a fast drip or a small stream, and post filter or filters must be filled before water will come from the hose.)

When water begins to drip from the product water hose, allow the unit to run to drain for at least two hours before you begin to capture the water for drinking.

Startup for Style B Units

For STYLE B Units only. Important: When starting the unit for the first time, or when changing the prefilter, remove the tube that enters the membrane housing (on the cap end of the housing). Start water into the unit and allow the prefilter to rinse for a full minute, then turn off the water, reinstall the tube, and turn the water back on. This is necessary to prevent "fines" (carbon dust) from the prefilter from entering the membrane vessel. (When you do it, you'll see why it's necessary.) THIS STEP IS NOT NECESSARY WITH STYLE C UNITS WHICH USE FULL-SIZED FILTER HOUSINGS.

When water begins to drip from the product water hose, allow the unit to run to drain for at least two hours before you begin to capture the water for drinking.

This unit contains an extra cartridge. It is the prefilter, which should be replaced after 6 months of service.

Tube Identification

The White Hard Tube is the inlet to the unit.

The Black Tube is the drain water. It goes to a sink or another suitable drain.

The Soft White Tube is the product water--what you're going to collect for drinking.

Service Instructions and Recommendations

For Style A (Full-Sized Unit)

The membrane should be replaced only when needed. Need can be determined by a TDS tester (we sell them but one is not provided with this unit). If you're guessing, replace the membrane at least every third year. To replace, remove the plug-in elbow that connect the tube to the cap of the housing, then follow the membrane replacement instructions.

Filter cartridges should be replaced annually. For units with standard cartridges, the CTO cartridge goes in the black housing and the KX-1 goes in the white. Turn off the water, unscrew the housing sump from the cap using the wrench provided (it unscrews counterclockwise), and replace the cartridges. There is no up or down on these cartridges. Tighten the housing snugly, but don't overtighten.

When the cartridges and/or membrane are installed, start the unit and let it rinse for two hours before capturing the water for use.

For Style B (Compact Unit)

The membrane should be replaced only when needed. Need can be determined by a TDS tester (we sell them but one is not provided with this unit). If you're guessing, replace the membrane at least every third year. To replace, remove the plug-in elbow that connects the tube to the cap of the housing, then follow the membrane replacement instructions.

The prefilter should be replaced after six months of use and the post filter after a year. An extra cartridge is included with new units. It is for the first prefilter replacement.

Changing the inline carbon filters is done by pressing in the collet (the little grey collar that touches the tube) of the quick connect fitting of the filter and at the same time pulling out the plug-in elbow that holds the tube. Remove the elbows from both ends and pull the filter out of the clips (IMPORTANT: NOTE THE DIRECTION OF FLOW THAT IS SHOWN BY AN ARROW ON THE FILTER BEFORE REMOVING THE OLD FILTER). Install the new filter in the same direction as the original. Install by pushing the plug-in elbows into the ends of the new filter until you feel the elbow hit bottom.

When the cartridges and/or membrane are installed, start the unit and let it rinse for two hours before capturing the water for use.

WHEN THE PREFILTER IS CHANGED, BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE PREFILTER RINSE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN ABOVE IN THE "STARTUP FOR STYLE B" SECTION.
