Install the adapter by screwing it into the 3/8" port in the Multi-Pure cartridge.
Submerge the cartridge in the container of water to be filtered. The position of the cartridge doesn't matter. It can stand on its end or lie on its side. The cartridge will float initially, and you can speed the process up by putting a weight on it to make it sink.
Let cartridge soak until it won't float. This may take some time the first time you use the filter, but it will sink easily on subsequent uses.
Start the filter by sucking on the tube until you get water in your mouth. The first time you use the filter, you may have to suck very hard.
Lower the end of the tube to a place lower than the container and water should continue to flow.
For first time use, allow the water to run for at least 2 hours to rinse the filter. A very brief rinse will do after the cartridge is broken in.
After the filter is rinsed, capture the water for use.
Filter will continue to operate as long as there is water in the upper container.
This is an extremely effective drinking water filter. The Multi-Pure cartridge is a superior performer with extensive NSF certification. It is to be used only with potable water. If water is taken from a questionable source (a lake or stream, for example) it MUST BE CHLORINATED. See instructions below. The Multi-Pure filter is not designed to remove bacteria. If the water is treated with chlorine (standard household bleach), however, the Multi-Pure cartridge will remove the chlorine and its by products, an extensive range of chemicals, lead and heavy metals, and cysts (like giardia and cryptosporidium, which may not be killed by chlorination). For complete performance data on the CB-VOC cartridge, see Multi-Pure's website. Go here for NSF Certification.
Here's a bleach manufacturer's suggested chlorine dosage for purifying water:
2 drops of Regular Clorox Bleach per quart of water
8 drops of Regular Clorox Bleach per gallon of water
1/2 teaspoon Regular Clorox Bleach per five gallons of water
If water is cloudy, double the recommended dosages of Clorox Bleach.
A rule of thumb is, after adding bleach, stir well, then give the bleach plenty of time to work. You should have some residual—that is, you should be able to smell a bit of bleach in the water when you begin to use the siphon filter.
