Installing Undersink Water Filters

Our undersink filters are designed for easy, almost tool-free installation. Whether your unit is a single, double, or triple filter, the installation procedure is essentially the same. Begin by looking at the diagram. It shows a double filter, but the principle is the same for other styles.

With single filters, we often use a flat-bottomed vessel that stands free without a bracket. Other than standing it on the floor rather than hanging it, the installation procedure is the same.

The flow path is from the inlet valve attached to the cold water pipe under the sink, through the filter system (it will enter by way of the black vessel on multi-vessel systems), out the opposite side of the filter to the ledge faucet.

Install the valve on the cold water faucet line. If you have a copper pipe and a saddle valve, go here for complete instructions. If you have flexible tubing and an EZ Adapter inlet, go here for complete instructions. Be sure to turn off the water before you start.

To install the faucet, select a good spot on your sink. Check the underside to be sure you are avoiding braces and other obstructions. Be sure you have plenty of clearance for the water line. If possible, use a pre-existing hole. Large holes for sprayers or soap dispensers are fine. If you drill your own hole, it must be at least 7/16 " in diameter. If the sink is porcelain, you might want to get some advice before drilling. We'll help if you'll call 940-382-3814.

Attachment to both faucet and inlet valve are done with John Guest quick connect fittings. Use the plug-in elbows if you need an elbow fitting. See instructions. Be sure that the end of the tubing is squarely cut, then push it into the fitting until you feel it hit bottom. It's in to stay. Should you need to release it, be sure the water is turned off and all pressure is off the line, then push in with your fingernail on the small collet that contacts the tubing and simultaneously pull out the tubing. For illustrated instructions, go here.

For the tubing-attached Touchflo faucet that comes with your unit, the chrome escutcheon and the large black rubber washer go above the sink. The small black rubber washer, the plastic locating washer, the lock washer (star washer), then the bulkhead nut go beneath, in that order. Tighten until snug. Go here for an illustrated view of the faucet parts.

When faucet and inlet valve are in place, open the ledge faucet and lock it open. (The faucet handle toggles down, or it locks open if you raise it .) Slowly open the inlet valve and allow water to flow into the unit. It will eventually exit through the faucet. Check for leaks.

Allow the faucet to remain open and rinse the unit for at least five minutes. New carbon filters sometimes put out black particles called "fines" when they are first started. This is normal. It is also normal for the water to have a milky appearance due to air trapped in the pores of the carbon. It sometimes takes several hours for this to clear. It's OK to drink the water after the five-minute break-in. If the faucet drips a bit when closed, this is also normal for the first couple of days and is the result of pressure from trapped air. This, too, shall pass.
