Operating Pure Water Products' Style B Siphon Filter

1. Before you plan to use the filter, take the cartridge out of its box and soak it in water for at least an hour, longer if necessary. It should be in water deep enough to cover it completely. Placing an object on top of the cartridge to hold it under water will speed up the soaking process. Don't assemble the filter until the cartridge is so water-logged that it stays under water. This is important.

2. When the cartridge is completely saturated, open the filter vessel and screw the cartridge into the base firmly, but do not overtighten. (Leave the O ring on the stem of the cartridge).

3. Insert the push-in elbows with tubing attached into the ports in the filter base. They will swivel to allow you to position the tubing as desired. You can remove them if need be by pushing in on the small collet in the fitting and pulling out on the stem at the same time. NOTE DIRECTIONAL FLOW MARKED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BASE. THE ARROW SHOULD POINT TO THE WHITE TUBE. This is important to assure proper functioning of the filter.

4. Next, invert the tower (top) of the filter housing and fill it about one third full of water. With the tower inverted (so the water won't run out), screw the base onto the tower. Firmly, but don't overdo it.

5. Set the filter upright and insert the black tube into the water to be filtered. Provide a second vessel, placed lower than the first, to receive the filtered water that will come out of the white tube. .Look at the picture and arrange your vessels accordingly:

6. Suck on the white tube until you get water in your mouth. Then lower the tube quickly to the level of the lower container. The water should contiune to flow into the vessle from the action of the siphon you have created. If it doesn't continue to flow, suck on the white tube again and repeat the process until flow continues. If you can't suck water through the white tube, it means you did not soak the cartridge sufficiently before trying. It may be hard to start the filter. Have patience.

7. Once the filter has started flowing, it will continue to flow until the top container runs out of water. Add water to keep the filter operating.Once you have the filter started, restarting it after it runs out of water is easy.

8. The filter needs no maintenance as long as flow is good If the flow slows, clean the cartridge by wiping it gently with a cloth while rinsing it in relatively clean water.

The filter will last indefinitely. It should be replaced when a significant amount of the ceramic outer surface has been worn
away by cleaning, or until it becomes so filled with contaminants that cleaning will not restore normal water flow.

Doulton ceramic cartridges are capable of making virtually any water safe to drink from a microbiological standpoint. They are not designed to remove heavy chemical contamination. You can filter pond water and drink it, but be selective. The clearer the water, the less cleaning you'll have to do, and the longer the element will last.

Note: The instructions above are primarily for Doulton ceramic cartridges, but they apply as well to carbon block filters used as siphons. Carbon filters may require even more soaking than ceramics, and you definitely have to hold them under water until they are completely soaked.
